It possible could be a mourning portrait, it was not taken apart, it is unknown what material the portrait was painted on.
It has a small area on the glass that is shown in the photo, most likely a small chip, it does not take away from the picture.
The hoop on the back is marked Sterling and the frame does not react to a magnet.
It measures 3\" to the top of the frame and 2 1/2\" wide.
