Pre-Civil War 6th plate Ambrotype of elderly woman who likely was born in the last years of the 1700s. This photo dates from the late 1850s and is a rarer type that required additional work by the photographer as the entire background behind the sitter was removed and the area directly behind her was painted black on the clear glass plate & then white paper was added to give an artificial bright white backdrop. The case is relatively good condition apart from some loosening of the case’ spine.
