The Leather Face — Why It Matters:

The solid, hard-rubber guttie caused nicks and dents in clubfaces — to prevent this, someone got the idea of putting a slab of thick leather into the center of the clubface. It made manufacture costlier, but saved throwing the entire club away when it became too guttie-worn.</cite> When the rubber-core ball replaced the gutty around 1900, the need for leather inserts declined sharply — making clubs with original intact leather face inserts survivors of a very specific and early production window, dating this Spalding firmly to the pre-1900 gutty ball era.
The Maker:
A.G. Spalding & Bros. began its golf club manufacturing in the mid-1890s — one of the earliest American commercial golf club producers.
