DESCRIPTION
Fine antique A.P. Donaghho 2-gallon stoneware crock from Parkersburg, West Virginia. Late 19th century, probably circa 1875–1900. Original cobalt-blue stencil “DONAGHHO CO / PARKERSBURGH W.Va.” with the 2-gallon capacity designation. Characteristic heavy rolled/flared rim and incised horizontal rings associated with Donaghho stoneware. The salt-glazed surface has attractive natural firing variation and age-related patina. Coiled firing lines plainly visible.
Alexander Polk Donaghho (1829-1900) is believed to have learned the pottery trade in the Monongahela Valley in Pennsylvania. He established his own pottery business in Parkersburgh, West Virginia in 1874, and operated until his death in 1900.
CONDITION
Overall very good. Some fading to the cobalt lettering. Small chip on the base rim. No hairlines or or evidence of repair (all visible in the images). A FINE NINETEENTH CENTURY DONAGHHO STONEWARE CROCK!
