Antique hand-hammered copper Judaica wall plaque by Arrow Metal Works, New York, measuring approximately 13.5" in diameter and 2" deep.
This substantial and unusual piece of American decorative metalwork is formed in the shape of a six-pointed Star of David (Magen David). The design features hammered triangular panels, six applied hammered bosses, and an applied three-dimensional bearded male head or mask at the center.
The reverse is clearly maker-marked:
“HANDCRAFT BY ARROW METAL WORKS NEW YORK”
An integral hanging ring on the reverse appears original to the manufacture, indicating that the piece was intended, at least in part, for wall display. Its deeply formed construction also gives it the appearance of a shallow bowl or plaque. I have not located original Arrow Metal Works advertising identifying the manufacturer's precise name or intended use for this particular design.
The prominent six-pointed-star form strongly identifies the design with Jewish/Judaica decorative arts. The identity of the bearded central figure is unknown, and I have therefore not attributed him to a particular biblical or historical figure.
Condition
Antique condition with surface wear, scratches, oxidation, discoloration, and areas of green verdigris, all consistent with age and clearly visible in the photographs.
This piece has been left entirely AS FOUND. I have not polished the copper or attempted to remove the verdigris. This was intentional so that the purchaser can preserve the existing aged surface and patina or determine what, if any, cleaning or conservation is appropriate.
