Exceptional antique Awaji pottery tea set featuring deep cobalt blue and green irises against a vivid yellow ground. Dating to circa 1910, this striking Japanese art pottery service is hand turned with hand-incised floral decoration.
The Iris pattern is beautifully rendered, with deeply incised individual petals, flowing leaves and grasses picked out in rich blue and green glazes. The carving gives the flowers remarkable dimension, particularly where the darker glaze settles into the incised lines.
The bold geometric handles and finials provide a wonderful contrast to the organic iris decoration, giving the service a remarkably modern appearance despite its early 20th-century date.
This matched 11-piece service includes a lidded teapot, covered sugar bowl, creamer, four teacups and four matching saucers.
