This is a set of eight early 20th-century English bone china plates made by Cauldon Ltd of Staffordshire, successor to the historic Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. They were retailed by Davis Collamore & Co., one of New York’s most prestigious fine china houses, which supplied custom and monogrammed services to the city’s leading families. The backs carry the Cauldon maker’s mark, the Davis Collamore Fifth Avenue retailer’s stamp, and the hand-painted pattern number H7992.
Each plate has a wide raised gold laurel-leaf band on the rim, framed by fine gold lines, on a gracefully scalloped edge. An ornate gold monogram of intertwined script letters sits at the top of each plate, a hallmark of a privately commissioned service from the Gilded Age into the early 1900s. The warm ivory body sets off the gilding beautifully.
These plates are an elegant choice for formal dinners and holiday tables, or for display in a china cabinet or on a plate rack. They will appeal to collectors of antique English porcelain, Cauldon, Davis Collamore, monogrammed china, and gold-encrusted tableware.
