Here's anAntique Dresden-style Christmas tree ornament in embossed cardboard with gold foil on the front and silver foil on the back. The tree is covered in finely embossed branches and decorated with about 24 tiny hand-painted foil candles in green, blue and purple, each topped with a red star. A chromolithograph cherub scrap holding a sprig sits at the top, with the original black thread hanger.
The tree comes with its red-painted lattice fence base, which is backed with tinsel. Two period die-cut scrap figures stand on the base: a dancing girl in a pink dress and a gentleman in a blue coat leaning on the fence. A small tab on the base holds the tree trunk.
A previous owner, my Aunt, penciled “1880” on the paper tag on the back. I can’t verify that date, so I’m describing the piece as late 19th to early 20th century, based on the style and construction. I believe it is very old and not a reproduction but had been "edited" early on.
Condition: Complete but with age-related wear, and not perfect. Please look carefully at the photos.
- The base is detached from the tree and is shown separately. It was not glued or repaired in this century, so you can display or re-attach it as you like.
- Old yellowed tape is on the lower right branches, with adhesive residue visible on the back. I did not remove it.
- The cherub scrap has creases and small cracks.
- The scrap figure of the gentleman does not have fading it is a reflection.
- There is light foil wear and tarnish on the tinsel.
