Antique Early 20th Century Wood & Cast Iron Swivel Coat / Hat Wall Rack
A beautiful and unusually constructed antique wall-mounted coat and hat rack featuring a warm aged wood frame combined with dark iron hardware and independently moving swivel hooks. The distinctive two-tier design, folding/swivel mechanism, multiple double hooks, and two extra-long upper hooks make this a much more substantial and interesting example than the more commonly seen single-row wall racks.
This rack is constructed with three horizontal wooden rails and two levels of hanging hardware. It features seven double iron hooks — four across the upper section and three across the lower section — plus two additional long upper swivel hooks, likely intended for hats or other larger items. The hooks pivot independently and can be swung outward for use or rotated back toward the wall when not needed, creating the classic collapsible / swing-away design.
The metal hardware was tested with a magnet and is strongly magnetic, confirming that it is ferrous metal rather than brass or copper. Based on the surface, casting style, construction and closely comparable documented examples, the hardware is consistent with cast iron. The exact wood species has not been confirmed, so no specific wood type is being claimed.
Dating: No maker’s mark, manufacturer’s stamp, label or signature has been found on the piece, so an exact maker and production year cannot be confirmed. However, comparison with documented antique wood-and-cast-iron swivel coat and hat racks of nearly identical construction strongly suggests an early 20th-century date, approximately circa 1900–1920. Comparable period examples use the same combination of wooden rails, iron hanging loops, independently rotating/collapsible hooks and swing-away construction. This piece therefore appears to be an original period rack rather than a modern reproduction, although the exact date and manufacturer remain unknown.
Measurements: Overall height is approximately 7 inches. The regular double-hook assemblies measure approximately 3½–4 inches along the longer arm and approximately 2¼ inches in height. The two larger upper swivel hooks extend considerably farther, approximately 5½–6 inches when positioned outward. Please also review the measurement photos, which are included as part of the description and show the scale directly.
Weight: approximately 1 lb 4.7 oz (20.7 oz / about 587 g).
The rack retains attractive age-related character throughout, including natural wear to the wood finish, minor surface marks, color variation, darkened patina and oxidation on the iron hardware, and slight age-related curvature/variation in the wooden rails. These characteristics are consistent with an antique utilitarian piece of this age. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact condition and details.
Two original-style metal hanging loops are located along the top for wall mounting. The swiveling hardware remains one of the most distinctive features of the piece and allows the hooks to be positioned as needed rather than remaining permanently extended.
A wonderful functional antique for an entryway, hallway, mudroom, farmhouse, cottage, historic home, Victorian/Edwardian-inspired interior, primitive decor, or antique collection. It works beautifully as a coat rack, hat rack, scarf rack, robe hook, towel rack, bag hanger or decorative wall organizer, while retaining the character of an early-1900s architectural household accessory.
