Beautiful early 20th-century mahogany coal purdonium or fireside coal scuttle, believed to be English and dating approximately to the Edwardian/early George V period, circa 1910–1920This is an especially interesting furniture-form example featuring an unusual patented brass locking and tilting mechanism stamped “PATENT 11278/10.” The paneled front tilts outward to provide access to the fitted removable metal coal hopper/liner.Constructed in mahogany with a molded top, raised paneled front, decorative brass drop handle and shaped plinth feet. The cabinet measures approximately 22” high × 15” wide × 14” deep.The original/period fitted metal coal hopper remains with the piece, an important feature as these liners are often missing from surviving coal purdoniums.Approximate dimensions:
