Effanbee (F&B) 14” Compo and Cloth BABY DAINTY 1912-1929
Effanbee Toy Company (F and B, F&B) was one of the top Americandoll makers in the early 20th century. They produced quality dolls. They are most famous for their Patsy Dollsline and their wonderful “mama dolls”.
This doll is Baby Dainty. She stands approximately 14” tall. She is a cloth and composition doll. Baby Dainty was sold in a few different bodystyles.They were offered between1912-1929. She is a shoulder-head withmolded painted blond hair and has composition arms and legs that are jointed atthe shoulder and hip. The body is clothand the shoulder-head attaches to the body.Her facial features are painted.She has pretty blue eyes. She hasa closed mouth.
Her clothing is authentic and original, as I found another similardress ensemble but in a different pattern print, in the Collector\'sEncyclopedia of American Composition Dolls, 1900-1950 by Ursula R. Mertz,on page 181. It consists of a short dressover a matching onesie with a matching bonnet.The dress is fastened in the back with a safety pin. There is a small hole in the organdy collarat the neckline. The shoes arereplacements and they are also vintage, but they did not come with this doll andare not as old as she. They are an appropriatestyle for her.
She is marked on the back of the shoulder plate: EFFANBEE / Baby Dainty
The overall condition of the compo on this doll is very goodfor her age. There are some typical scratchesand marks on the compo, and some discolorations throughout on this 100-year-old doll. Very little crazing andno paint peels or lifting but there is minor paint chipping around the edge of the shoulder plate where it attaches to the body. The onlymajor flaw I see is that she is missing three fingers on her right hand. A talented doll doctor could probably fixthis, but my personal opinion is that it can be hidden by creative placement ofthe limb when displayed. After all, she is 100! She is an excellent example of a popular composition doll. This sweet little darling is just waiting for a new home with hugs!!
