Description:
A striking heart-shaped sterling silver box by Foster & Bailey,marked “F&B” and “STERLING.” The exterior features elaborateraised floral and scroll decoration, with a crown-shaped finial at the top. Theinterior has a gold wash and decorative embossed detailing.
The box is engraved with an “M” on one side and a “B”on the other. Its sculptural heart form and ornate surface make it adistinctive piece for a collection, dressing table, or display.
History of the maker: Foster & Bailey was aProvidence, Rhode Island, jewelry and silver manufacturer. A late-19th-centuryhistory of Providence reports that the business began in 1873 as White, Foster& Co.; after Walter E. White left around 1877, the firm became Foster &Bailey. A 1901 Rhode Island business history records that the company wasincorporated in 1898 as Theodore W. Foster & Bro. Co. and made rolled-goldjewelry and sterling silver goods. The successor company continued to use theF&B mark, so the mark alone does not establish the exact year this box wasmade.
