Wonderful antique taxidermy fish mount, apparently depicting a Northern Pike, with tremendous primitive folk-art character.
This unusual early example features preserved natural skin and fins over an extremely lightweight internal form, along with inset glass eyes, an open mouth with numerous teeth, and extensive hand-painted detailing to the scales and body. The remarkably light weight is consistent with an old hollow or lightweight taxidermy construction rather than a solid carved-wood fish.
The surface has beautifully mellowed with age, giving the piece an almost sculptural folk-art appearance. Particularly striking are the elongated pike head, fierce open mouth, wonderfully aged glass eyes, delicate ribbed fins, and individually visible scale pattern.
Likely early 20th century, approximately c. 1900–1930.
A fabulous piece for a collection of antique sporting art, fishing memorabilia, taxidermy, lodge décor, cabin décor, or American folk art.
