Description:
A stunning antique French Napoleon III bookmark. A page marker made from pierced and engraved gilt bronze with the top \"clip\" section decorated with champleve enamel.
This piece would originally have had another section (a charm / pendant to hang outside the book) which would have been connected to this page marker section with a ribbon. It can still be used as a page marker.
This piece may have originally been part of a larger desk set.
Has damage to the enamel with quite a few areas missing, please see the close up image and description of condition.
Identifying Marks / Makers Marks:Unmarked.
Age / date of 3 1/2\" (8.9 cm) long and is 3/4\" (1.9 cm) across at the widest part of the flat page marker section. The enamel section measures 1 5/8\" (4.1 cm) x 5/8\" (1.6 cm) at the widest points.Condition:In antique used condition. Has damage to the enamel which is missing in quite a few areas. The white enamel should continue on both sides at the edges but is missing and the central red leaf has most of the enamel missing. On the other sections there are minor losses and some cracks. I have shown a close up image of the enamel.The gilt bronze is in fair antique used condition with some nicks to the edge of the metal near the point, tarnish and fine surface scuff marks and some wear to the gilt finish on the reverse.I have not polished this as I prefer the aged patina.
