The Four Continents & Twelve Signs of the Zodiac | Circa 1887–1905

A remarkable and highly decorative Neoclassical hard-paste porcelain compote, featuring an elaborate allegorical composition of the Four Continents—America, Europe, Asia, and Africa—surmounted by a central footed bowl depicting the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac.

This extraordinary centerpiece combines figural sculpture, hand-painted decoration, and elaborate allegorical symbolism into a striking representation of the earthly and celestial realms. Each continental figure is individually modeled and richly decorated, while the central vessel introduces a second layer of symbolism through the astrological signs.

The four allegorical figures represent the four corners of the known world. Although individually distinguished by costume, attributes, and appearance, the figures share similar stylized hooved feet, creating a visual connection between the continents and suggesting the common primal nature of humanity beneath their cultural differences.

America is represented by an Indigenous man wearing a feathered headdress and cloak and holding an axe or tomahawk. Such imagery was commonly employed in European allegorical art to represent the Americas and evoke themes of wilderness, natural abundance, and the untamed New World.

Europe appears as a blonde-haired classical woman dressed in regal Greco-Roman-inspired attire. She holds what appears to be a book or tablet, attributes associated with knowledge, learning, written culture, law, and the classical traditions of European civilization.

Africa is represented by a dark-skinned male figure adorned with gold earrings, a richly decorated cloth, and a crown of colorful feathers. He holds a colorful leaf and a tortoise, incorporating imagery associated with the continent\'s natural environment, flora, and distinctive wildlife.

Asia is represented by an elegant black-haired woman wearing her hair in a traditional bun and adorned with gold earrings, a red necklace, and bracelets. She holds an amphora-style vessel and wears a decorative sarong. Her attributes evoke the beauty, luxury, commerce, and historic trade traditions associated with Asia, including the celebrated trade in spices and silk.

Positioned at the center is a smaller raised, footed bowl, decorated immediately below the rim with a medieval- or Renaissance-inspired sequence depicting the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac.

The juxtaposition of the Four Continents with the Zodiac is particularly compelling. The continents represent the terrestrial world and humanity, while the Zodiac represents the celestial heavens, creating an ambitious decorative program uniting the earthly and heavenly spheres.

The entire centerpiece is beautifully hand-painted throughout, with extensive decorative detailing that rewards close examination. The combination of sculptural modeling, painted ornament, allegorical figures, and symbolic imagery makes this a particularly impressive example of late 19th-century German porcelain artistry.

The underside of the base bears a blue mark with incised alphanumeric markings, together with the number 60, which is hand-painted.

The partially hollow footed base is additionally stamped internally in blue with KPM and crossed lines. The mark is attributed to Kister Porzellan-Manufaktur, a German porcelain manufacturer located in Waldenburg. Circa 1887–1905.

Very good condition overall, with no serious damage. Heavy in weight.

The porcelain has been well preserved for its age, with the hand-painted decoration remaining in very nice condition and the colors still vivid and attractive.

The following condition details should be noted:

• The Asian female figure with black hair is missing an element from her hand. There is a small flake/chip on her breast, which appears to be associated with the missing element.

• None of the rims have chips.

• There are no hairline cracks or breaks.

• There is some commensurate age wear to be expected withno crazing or staining.

• The hand-painted gold trim on the rim of the smaller central bowl and other gold accents through out the decoration have faded in areas. Also, the smaller bowl has very small areas of faded spots on the hand painted blue borders. Please see photographs for a closer view.

• Otherwise, there are no additional chips, hairline cracks, breaks, stains, or crazing noted.

• The remaining hand-painted decoration is in very nice overall condition, with strong, vivid colors.
