Antique Goofus Glass 13" Candlestick Holder Gold Painted Black Amethyst - 1910s
This antique goofus glass candlestick holder is a hard to find piece of American history! Back during the Early American Pressed Glass or EAPG period in the late 1800s & early 1900s, these pieces were produced as carnival prizes. They are known as the first true pieces of "carnival glass". Most pieces were developed using clear or black amethyst glass, then painted after cooling. The vast majority were painted gold and or red with some green also known. The 2 biggest producers were Indiana Glass and Dugan glass. However there were many different makers that produced it regionally.
Condition:
The overall condition of this piece is quite excellent. Most goofus glass pieces have the majority of the paint peeling or already flashed off. This one retains the vast majority of its original paint. While there are some flakes that have come off and a few soft spots where the paint would easily peel if handled roughly, the integrity of most is still strong. There are no chips, cracks or any sort of damage to the glass. This is remarkable as most pieces have chips and flea bites all over and this has none. Will be shipped using extreme care to ensure that it makes it in the same condition as sold.
