Antique Hertel, Schwab & Co. German character baby doll, mold number 151, dating to approximately 1912.
This expressive 15-inch baby doll features a solid-dome bisque porcelain head with molded and painted hair, brown glass sleep eyes with lashes, softly painted brows and cheeks, and an open mouth with four teeth. The eyes close when the doll is laid down, although they may not always close completely.
The back of the head is incised “Made in Germany 151” with a size number below.
The doll has a bent-limb composition body with jointed arms and legs. She is dressed in a pretty pink smocked gown with lace trim and a matching lace-trimmed bonnet. Clothing appears to be a later replacement and is not represented as original to the doll.
Condition: The bisque head presents beautifully with no cracks, chips, or repairs observed. The composition body shows age-related wear, including paint loss and rubbing, particularly on the hands, fingers, feet, and toes. There is cracking and surface damage around the neck and shoulder area. The area near the hip appears to be surface wear rather than a structural crack. Additional scattered rubs, discoloration, and surface imperfections are present from age and use.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description.
Measures approximately 15 inches tall.
Doll, pink gown, bonnet, and display stand are included.
