This listing is for an antique Japanese iron tsuba featuring a finely carved landscape scene with mountains, traditional buildings, water, and figures in a boat.
The design is characteristic of landscape-themed work associated with the Choshu school/style, known for detailed carving on iron sword fittings. The composition extends across both sides of the tsuba, creating a panoramic Japanese landscape with mountains rising behind traditional architecture and a quiet waterside scene below.
One side features particularly detailed carving of buildings nestled among the mountains, together with a bridge and two figures traveling by boat. The reverse continues the landscape motif in a more restrained composition.
The iron surface retains an attractive dark aged patina, with natural wear, oxidation, and surface variation consistent with age. The nakago-ana also shows evidence of historical fitting/adjustment.
A traditional wooden kiri (paulownia) storage box is included.
This is an attractive example for collectors of Japanese sword fittings, particularly those interested in Choshu-style ironwork and landscape designs.
