Antique Japanese blue and white porcelain bowl and matching saucer featuring traditional crane decoration and prominent 16-petal chrysanthemum emblems, known as the Kiku Mon.
The finely decorated porcelain bowl features cranes in flight and standing among grasses, alternating with large chrysanthemum crests. The matching saucer is decorated with an elaborate arrangement of flowers, foliage, birds, and repeating chrysanthemum motifs in cobalt blue underglaze.
The 16-petal chrysanthemum crest is historically associated with the Japanese Imperial Family, making this an especially interesting example of Japanese blue-and-white porcelain.
Closely related Japanese porcelain pieces featuring cranes and the 16-petal chrysanthemum crest have been described in the Japanese antiques market as Imperial Household / Gosho-use or imperial presentation ware, including examples attributed to the late Edo period.
