Large Antique Japanese Satsuma / Kyo-Satsuma Vase – Dai Nippon / Kinkozan Mark – Approx. 37 cm / 14.5\"
An impressive large Japanese earthenware vase measuring approximately 37 cm high, richly decorated with traditional Japanese figural scenes, elaborate textile-inspired geometric patterns, raised enamel decoration and gilt detailing.
The vase has an unusual and highly decorative form, featuring twin sculptural loop handles and an elaborate scalloped/flared rim.
The cream-coloured earthenware body displays the fine crackled glaze characteristic of Satsuma-type pottery, with extensive hand-painted decoration around the body.
One side depicts Japanese figures in traditional dress within a landscape, while the reverse carries a further figural scene with a seated warrior or nobleman and attendant. The neck and shoulders are extensively decorated with floral, geometric and raised enamel motifs.
The underside bears a worn hand-painted Japanese mark which appears to include:
大日本 – Dai Nippon (“Great Japan”)
together with characters consistent with a Kinkozan / Kinkōzan mark.
Kinkozan was an important Kyoto workshop associated with high-quality Kyo-Satsuma production during the Meiji period and with Japanese ceramics produced for the international market.
Because the mark is worn and the vase has not been independently authenticated by a specialist, it is being offered as:
Japanese Satsuma / Kyo-Satsuma vase bearing a Dai Nippon / Kinkozan-type mark, probably Meiji period or early 20th century.

Condition
Very good antique condition. No chips, cracks or restoration observed on careful inspection. Both sculptural handles and the complicated scalloped rim remain intact.
There is fine glaze crazing throughout, together with age-related wear and some rubbing/loss to gilding and enamel decoration. These are consistent with the age and nature of Satsuma-type earthenware.
