Impressive antique pair of Abraham Lincoln portrait bookends by Jennings Brothers, one of the better-known American makers of early 20th-century decorative art metal.
Each is clearly marked on the reverse “JB 1618,” identifying the Jennings Brothers maker and catalog/model number 1618.
Dating to approximately the 1920s–1930s, circa 1930, the bookends feature a deeply modeled relief portrait of Abraham Lincoln against an architectural arched background. They have a beautiful naturally aged dark bronze/copper-toned surface with warm highlights and areas of verdigris.
These are exceptionally substantial bookends. Each measures approximately 7\" high × 4¾\" wide × 3¼\" deep and weighs approximately 5 lb 15.5 oz, combined(approx 3 lb ea)
The surfaces have only been given a cursory wipe and have not been polished or aggressively cleaned. They are offered as found so the original aged surface and patina remain intact.
A handsome pair for a library, office or collection of Lincolniana, American historical memorabilia or early American art metal.
Vintage green felt remains on the undersides.
Original antique condition with a particularly attractive aged bronze/copper patina. Surface wear, scratches, oxidation and areas of verdigris are present consistent with age. There is a minor ding/bend along the upper rear corner/top edge of one bookend. The green felt coverings on the bases are lifting/separating along the edges, with some underlying base material visible. Other small surface marks and age-related imperfections are present as photographed. No attempt has been made to polish or restore the metal. Please review photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
