Up for sale is an incredibly rare Neoclassical wax-on-slate relief medallion. It measures exactly 8 cm in diameter and features a beautifully detailed nude male figure lounging against draped fabric.
This piece is done in a distinct \"wax-on-slate\" style that was popularized by the famous sculptor John Flaxman and his workshop in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
The Details:
The Front: The cream/beige colored wax relief sits directly on top of a solid black natural slate base. Please note that the head is missing from the figure due to historical damage, but the remaining torso and drapery still show incredible detail.
Condition: It has an amazing, genuine aged patina. Along with the missing head, there are two stable hairline age-cracks in the wax (one through the drapery and one on the thigh). These are completely normal for 200-year-old wax and prove the piece has real age.
The Back: It still has its original, handwritten paper backing from a 19th-century collector or antique shop.
The label reads exactly:
Top Notation: 1/3/91
