“The stamping on this historical tool is confirmation of the tools pedigree. The date August 31, 1858 represents the foundational patent granted to Leonard Bailey. This design introduced the lever cap system that securely clamps the cutting iron in place, eliminating the old method of using wooden wedges. Because this tool has the L Bailey name alongside the solo patent date, it is a highly collectible piece manufactured either by Leonard Bailey himself in Boston before he partnered with Stanley or one of Stanley’s earliest productions from around 1867 to 1875 using Bailey’s patented hardware.”
This plane measures 6 inches from toe to heal, and is 1 5/8” wide. The overall length of the tool is approximately 8 1/2 inches from toe to the back of the handle.
This tool belonged to my great grandfather. The condition of this tool is everything works as it should. It does have a small chip on the side that will show up in the photographs.
As always, photos are part of the description. Thank you for your interest.
