Somebody Made Roses for a Living, and This Is How

A shaped metal head on a slim steel shank, set into a turned wooden handle worn smooth by a hand that used it a great deal. The head is where the work is: one face carries a leaf with its central rib and side veins cut deep, the body is channeled into fat lobes for cupping petals, and the reverse is left domed and smooth. The metal has gone a mottled brown-bronze with age and use.

Here\'s how it worked. A milliner heated the head — over a spirit lamp, a gas ring, a stove — and pressed it into starched silk or cotton. The heat set the fabric permanently into the shape of the tool. Leaves got their veins from a head like this one; petals got their curl from the lobed faces. Every rose, violet, and spray of foliage on a Victorian or Edwardian hat was made this way, one press at a time, by a woman working at a bench.

Look at the handle end and you\'ll see a metal collar with a set screw. This is an interchangeable-head tool. One handle, and a set of heads that swapped in as the work demanded — leaf veiners, ball tools in graduated sizes, petal cups, fluters. What you\'re holding is one head and the handle from somebody\'s working kit, the rest of it scattered long ago. Milliners still hunt these; the shapes vary from maker to maker and set to set, and there\'s no such thing as having too many.

Tools like this are among the best small objects you can put on a shelf, because the shape is beautiful and the purpose isn\'t obvious until somebody asks. Stand it in a crock on a kitchen counter with wooden spoons and let it be the odd one. Lay it across a stack of books on a desk. Set it in a shadow box with a scrap of silk and a hat pin. Or hand it to a milliner, who will know exactly what it is and want to heat it up.

Condition: Honest working wear. The head is oxidized and mottled throughout, with fine surface pitting and darkening in the recesses — this is patina and I have not removed it. The wooden handle has scattered scratches, light denting, and a hairline in the grain; the finish has worn through where the hand sat. The ferrule and set screw are present. The shank is straight.
