Antique Mrs. Hemans\' Poetical Works - Gilt Pegasus - Belford, Clarke & Co.
Product Overview:
A rare and visually stunning Victorian edition of The Poetical Works of Mrs. Felicia Hemans, published by the renowned Belford, Clarke & Co. (Chicago/New York) circa 1885-1889. This edition is a prime example of late 19th-century \"Fine Binding,\" designed to be as much a piece of art as a literary collection.
Design Features:
The Pegasus Binding: The front cover features a high-luster gold-stamped Pegasus leaping through a field of chrysanthemums. This is one of the more elusive and desirable designs from the Belford Clarke \"Poets\" series.
All Edges Gilt (Aeg): All three sides of the page block are finished in brilliant gold gilt, which remains reflective and bright.
Ornate Spine: The spine is also heavily gilded with the \"Belford Clarke\" publisher name clearly visible at the foot.
Condition Report:
Exterior: The gold gilding on the cover is remarkably vibrant. The cloth shows light shelf wear and \"bumping\" to the corners and spine ends, common for a book of this age.
Interior: The binding is firm and the pages are secure. First page has a stamp with the previous owner\'s name other wise pages a clean
Collector\'s Note:
Belford, Clarke & Co. were known for their aggressive and beautiful publishing style in the 1880s. Finding the Pegasus motif with the gold edges still intact makes this a \"shelf-ready\" specimen for collectors of Victorian fine bindings or women\'s literature.
