Antique Parrot & Military Macaw EngravingsSet of Five Original Hand-Colored Bird Prints
These five original hand-colored copperplate engravings come from Ornithologischer Atlas, an illustrated survey of birds beyond Europe begun by German zoologist Carl Wilhelm Hahn (1786–1835). Hahn also wrote a pioneering German scientific study of spiders. He began the atlas in 1834 but died the following year after completing just six installments. Naturalist Heinrich Carl Küster (1807–1876) continued the publication through 1841.
Parrots account for 80 of the atlas's 136 hand-colored plates. These five engravings, including the military macaw, come from that substantial section. Their matching format, shared publication, and original hand-coloring make them a cohesive nineteenth-century natural history collection.CATALOG DETAILSCollection: Five original antique bird engravings, sold togetherIncluded birds:No. 10: Red-fronted ParakeetNo. 11: Military MacawNo. 14: Black-headed CaiqueNo. 15: Long-tailed Green ParakeetNo. 16: Orange-winged AmazonArtist / Source: Carl Wilhelm Hahn; Ornithologischer AtlasPublication: Nuremberg, 1834–1841Technique: Hand-colored copperplate engravingsSheet dimensions: Approximately 5 × 8¼ in eachPresentation: Loose; unmatted and unframedCONDITION
