Antique Simplex Lamp Co. New York Medical Vaporizer / Oil Lamp
Offered is an unusual antique metal vaporizer lamp manufactured by the Simplex Lamp Co., New York. This type of small oil-burning apparatus dates to approximately the late 19th to early 20th century and was used as a medical vaporizer, sometimes referred to as a steam or croup vaporizer, for producing vapors associated with period respiratory treatments.
The piece consists of a pierced metal outer housing with decorative cutouts, wire handles, base and an interior removable oil reservoir/burner with long tapered spout. The underside is clearly stamped“SIMPLEX LAMP CO. NEW YORK.”
A very interesting survivor from the era of early home medical treatments and patent-medicine devices. It also makes an unusual addition to an antique medical, apothecary, primitive lighting or Americana collection.
The lamp shows considerable age and use, including surface oxidation/rust, discoloration, finish loss and general wear as shown in the photographs. I have not cleaned, restored, filled or attempted to operate it. It is being sold strictly as an antique collectible/display piece in its present condition.
