Spalding & Bros. crescent-pad fielder\'s baseball glove dating to approximately the late 1890s to early 1900s.This is an extremely early style of baseball glove from the transitional period when gloves were evolving from simple protective leather hand coverings into equipment specifically designed to help field and secure a baseball. The glove features the distinctive crescent-style padded palm/heel, a design associated with some of the earliest purpose-built baseball fielding gloves. Most importantly, this example retains multiple identifiable Spalding markings. The palm retains a visible Spalding script trademark impressed directly into the leather, while the original-style wrist strap retains its round metal “TRADE SPALDING MARK” button.Additional period construction features include heavy brown leather, individually formed fingers, early perimeter lacing/eyelets, padded palm construction and the primitive shallow-pocket configuration characteristic of turn-of-the-century baseball gloves.DETAILS:• Authentic vintage Spalding baseball glove

• Highly displayable piece of early baseball equipmentCONDITION:This glove is well over a century old and shows substantial authentic age and playing wear. The leather exhibits considerable surface wear, crazing, cracking, discoloration, dryness and areas of finish loss. There is wear and deterioration to portions of the crescent padding and leather, along with aged, worn and/or missing lacing in areas. The wrist area and edges also show age-related wear.Despite its age, the glove retains its recognizable original form, early crescent-pad construction, visible Spalding palm trademark and Spalding trademark wrist button. The glove has NOT been restored for this sale. Its aged surface and patina have been left intact. Please carefully examine all photographs, as they are an important part of the condition description and show the exact glove you will receive.Due to the age and condition of the leather, this item is being sold strictly as a collectible/display piece and not for use.HISTORICAL NOTE:Crescent-padded gloves represent an important stage in the evolution of baseball equipment. Rather than having the deep pocket associated with modern gloves, early manufacturers incorporated padded sections into the palm and heel to provide protection and assist players in fielding the ball. This Spalding example survives from that formative period in baseball equipment history and would make an outstanding addition to an early baseball, Spalding, pre-war sports memorabilia or baseball equipment collection.IMPORTANT DATE DISCLAIMER:Based upon its construction, markings and comparison with known period examples, the glove is believed to date approximately circa 1897–1905. An exact year or Spalding model number has not been conclusively established, so buyers should review the photographs and make their own assessment.A fantastic opportunity to own a genuine piece of early American baseball history.
