Exquisite Antique American Sterling Silver Bonbon Basket by Whiting Mfg. Co. (Circa 1900-1910)
Up for sale is a stunning authentic early-20th-century American tabletop candy/bonbon basket, crafted entirely from solid .925 sterling silver. This elegant Edwardian/Art Nouveau-era piece features a beautiful octagonal square form with gently sloped sides, a finely shaped moveable swing handle, and intricate repousse/embossed classical decorations along the rim depicting neoclassical urns, floral swags, and ribbons.
Maker's Mark & Authenticity:
The interior center of the bowl is sharply stamped with the official historical hallmark for the famous Whiting Manufacturing Company — a horizontal arrow passing through the initials W & C (often misread upside down as M & A). It is also accompanied by the guaranteed "STERLING" silver standard mark. This highly collectible piece dates to the absolute peak of Whiting's independent production, prior to the company's acquisition by Gorham in 1926.
Condition:
In excellent antique condition! The basket retains its original structural shape with no tears, severe dents, or old repairs. The handle moves smoothly and holds its position beautifully. It showcases a fantastic authentic dark patina in the recessed areas of the repousse, providing immense contrast and highlighting its 115+ year history. It can be easily shined up with silver polish if preferred, but is left in its authentic state for antique collectors.
