A distinctive Swedish folk art wooden bowl dating to around 1900, richly decorated with hand-cut geometric ornament across both sides.
The shallow oval bowl is framed by an architectural handle structure, with two horizontal rails terminating in a darkened upright at one end and a cylindrical upright at the other. Its exterior is densely carved with repeating compass-star or sunburst motifs enclosed within geometric panels, accented by small scrolls and textured fields. Additional incised decoration follows the upper edge.
The combination of a simple functional form and extensive hand-worked ornament is characteristic of Scandinavian vernacular craft. Particularly appealing is the contrast between the precisely organized carving and the irregularities and surface variation that reveal the maker's hand.
