This is a wonderful 1882 deluxe illustrated edition of Museum of Antiquity, and it has far more eye appeal than the average surviving copy.

The binding

The gold page edges remain remarkably bright, suggesting the book spent much of its life protected and not heavily read.

The top has:
- Significant rubbing.
- Surface loss.
- Chipping.
- Fraying at the crown.
There is also edge wear around the corners and some rubbing to the boards.
Fortunately, the damage is largely cosmetic and confined to the exterior. Structurally, the book appears much healthier than many Victorian presentation volumes.
The engravings
The plate shown (\"The Palace of the Caesars\") is beautifully preserved.
The tissue guard still present suggests the publisher intended these illustrations to be luxury features, protecting the engraving from offsetting onto facing pages.
Collectors often buy this book as much for its artwork as for the text.

These steel engravings were, for many readers, the closest thing to virtual reality available.
