Lovely late Nguyễn DynastyVietnamese wooden sewing and work box in rich, dense exotic hardwood with a dark lacquer finish, inset with engraved mother of pearl. Exterior is heavily ornamented with intricate iridescent nacre panels depicting delicate botanical motifs, birds, butterflies, and narrative scenes featuring traditional figures on the side panels. Beautiful as a display of historic craftsmanship or for restoration, as there are multiple inlay losses throughout the composition, notably on the central butterfly on the lid and within the garments of the figures on the side panels. Additionally, the lower rim of the base shows typical signs of dry-cracking and minor flaking consistent with age- please see pictures!
