Rare 19th C. Yellow Ware Soap Dish – Hollow One-Piece Form with Hand-Pierced Drainage HolesAntique Ohio PotteryThis rare hollow yellow ware soap dish dates to the mid to late 1800s and represents one of the most sought-after forms in American yellow ware pottery. Made as a single integrated piece, it features a round shape with a molded central drain hole and irregularly placed smaller holes that were hand-punched while the clay was still damp.
Soap dishes like this were both functional and cleverly designed—allowing water to drain from the top through a base cavity and out the side. Most antique yellow ware soap dishes are hollow, and very few have survived intact, making this an exceptional find. A similar example is pictured on page 108 of \"Collector’s Guide to Yellow Ware Book I\" (2003) by McAllister and Michel, where such pieces are valued between $495 and $650. Image included in photos.
This dish was likely produced in Ohio, a region known for high-quality yellow ware in the 19th century. Its rich buff glaze and utilitarian form reflect the charm and practicality of American domestic pottery from the period.
Highly collectible and increasingly scarce, especially in this condition—an ideal addition to any serious yellow ware or early American ceramics collection.
Condition:Shows signs of age, including rust stains, mineral deposits, chips, flea bites, stray marks, and overall crazing. No cracks are present, and the piece remains structurally sound.Dimensions: 4 7/8\" diameter, 2 5/8\" height, approx. Weight: 1.4 lbs.
