✨ ANTIQUE GEORGIAN BRASS CANDLE SNUFFERS / WICK-TRIMMING SCISSORS — c.1780–1810 ✨

An exceptionally evocative survivor from the age of candlelight, this substantial pair of antique brass candle snuffers—or wick-trimming scissors—appears consistent with late-18th to very early-19th-century Georgian manufacture, probably English, circa 1780–1810.

Long before the widespread adoption of self-consuming braided candle wicks, candles required regular trimming as they burned. Implements such as this were designed specifically for that task: the scissors cut away the charred portion of the wick while the distinctive box-like chamber captured the hot trimming, helping prevent it from falling onto furniture, textiles or the floor.

This example is particularly appealing for its wonderfully utilitarian construction. Rather than being an ornate presentation piece, it is a substantial working household implement—79.49 grams (2.804 oz.) of brass, with large oval finger bows, a simple peened pivot, rectangular wick-catching chamber, opposing cutting/pusher member and projecting tip associated with manipulating the wick.

🔎 CONSTRUCTION & AGE

Close examination under macro photography reveals remarkable evidence of early manufacture and hand finishing. The brass displays irregularities along the finger bows and shanks, extensive directional file/finishing marks, rougher protected surfaces, individually worked transitions and a straightforward peened pivot.

These characteristics are especially apparent in areas that were never intended to be prominently seen, while exposed and functional surfaces received considerably more finishing. This combination is consistent with the cast/formed and extensively hand-finished construction encountered on period brasswork.

Comparable scissor-form brass candle snuffers—with oval finger bows, rectangular wick-catching boxes, opposing plates and projecting wick-manipulating blades—are represented in museum collections and have been catalogued in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Because this example is unmarked and has no documented maker or original provenance, its precise year and country of manufacture cannot be independently established. The c.1780–1810, probably English attribution is based upon its form, construction and comparison with documented period examples and should be understood as an informed attribution rather than a documented date.

🔍 CONDITION

The snuffers are offered exactly as shown, with their historic surface preserved. They exhibit extensive age-appropriate surface wear, scratches, abrasions, pitting, oxidation/patination, discoloration, casting/forming irregularities, old file and finishing marks, small dents and other evidence of manufacture and long use.

The protected and recessed areas retain considerably rougher and darker surfaces than the more exposed portions. Numerous irregularities visible under extreme macro photography appear consistent with a combination of original manufacture, hand finishing, age and use.

No attempt has been made to polish away the historic character of the brass.

The scissors articulate at the pivot and the principal components appear intact. Please examine all photographs carefully, including the macro photographs, as they form an important part of the condition description and show the construction and surfaces far more closely than would ordinarily be visible to the naked eye.

No representation is made that this antique implement is suitable for modern functional use. It is offered as a historic collectible.

🕯️ A GENUINE OBJECT FROM THE AGE OF CANDLELIGHT

What makes this piece particularly compelling is its simplicity. It was not designed merely to decorate a room—it was a practical tool created for a household in which maintaining candlelight was part of everyday life.

More than two centuries later, the file marks, irregularities, worn surfaces and darkened recesses remain visible. For a collector of Georgian domestic metalware, antique lighting implements, early brass, candle accessories or historic household objects, it is a wonderfully tangible connection to that vanished ritual.
