Antique c.1884 Stanley No. 46 Traut’s Patent Skew Combination Plane – Type 5 For Sale

A desirable early example of Stanley’s ornate No. 46 Skew Cutter Combination Plane. Based on the characteristics I have been able to research, I believe this example to be a Type 5, dating circa 1884. I am not an expert on antique Stanley planes, however, so please carefully study all photographs and use your own judgment regarding the exact type, age, originality and completeness.This example retains the elaborate Victorian floral and scroll castings characteristic of the early No. 46, along with its wooden rear tote and front knob. The tote is stamped “TRAUT’S PATENT / MARCH 4, 73,” referencing Justus A. Traut’s 1873 patent.The plane displays nicely with considerable dark japanned finish remaining throughout the ornate castings. It shows expected wear from age and use, including finish loss, oxidation, scratches, tool marks and wear to the wooden components. The tote also bears lightly impressed “HS” initials, presumably from a former owner.Appears to have a No. 55 beadstopNo cutters or cutter box are included. The plane may contain replacement, later-period, or non-original accessories/components; I have made no attempt to disassemble it or verify every individual component.
