Beautiful antique French color engraving, published in Paris by Ostervald l’Aîné, Rue St. André des Arts No. 5, dating to the early 19th century, likely circa 1815–1825.
Titled “L’Amour la désole, l’Hymen la couronne,” this romantic allegorical scene depicts a young woman accompanied by Cupid and Hymen, the classical personification of marriage. The print features lovely period coloring with rich pink, blue, green and yellow tones and finely engraved detail throughout the landscape and figures.
The lower margin bears the original Paris publisher’s imprint as well as the word “Déposé.”

Condition
Antique condition with considerable age-related wear. The sheet shows overall toning, discoloration and scattered spotting/soiling. There is a prominent old water stain extending into the lower margin, along with additional staining visible on the reverse. Edges show wear, small tears, creasing and corner losses/folds, including a tear along the lower edge.
The reverse has old handwritten pencil arithmetic/calculations from a previous owner.
Despite the condition issues, the printed image remains remarkably attractive, with strong color and good visual detail for its age. The majority of the heavier staining and damage is concentrated in the margins rather than the central composition.
