Circa 1898Very poor very fragile condition!An evocative surviving German cookbook from the turn of the 20th century, Kochbuch für die bürgerliche Küche (“Cookbook for the Bourgeois/Middle-Class Kitchen”) by Hedwig Albrecht.Published in Dresden by Max Fischer’s Verlagsbuchhandlung, this period cookbook contains traditional German household recipes printed in beautiful old Fraktur type. Bibliographical records associate this work with a preface dated 1898.Recipes include soups, broths, meats, vegetables and other traditional dishes, with examples visible in the photographs including potato soup with sour cream (Kartoffelsuppe mit saurer Sahne), macaroni soup (Maccaronisuppe), bread-roll soup with egg (Semmelsuppe mit Ei) and numerous other recipes from the German kitchen of the period.Perhaps its most charming feature is the highly decorative original cover, depicting a woman cooking at the stove surrounded by vegetables, food and flowing botanical ornament — a wonderful piece of late-19th/turn-of-the-century culinary graphic design.PLEASE READ CONDITION CAREFULLY:This book is in VERY POOR / FRAGILE / DISTRESSED ANTIQUE CONDITION and is being sold strictly AS-IS.The binding has substantially failed.
