Historical records document Chippewa School District #98 in Franklin County, Kansas, established in 1902 on the former Chippewa-Munsee reservation. The district was created after members of the local Chippewa and Munsee community petitioned for a school closer to home for younger children.

Chippewa School District #98 was established in Franklin County, Kansas in 1902 after members of the local Chippewa and Munsee community petitioned the state for a nearby school.
Historical documentation identifies John H. Kilbuck, William Henry Kilbuck, Ignatius Caleb, and George Veix among those involved in establishing the district. The school served the surrounding community for decades and remained open until 1961.
The identification of “Chippewa School / District 98” on the placard provides unusually strong historical context for an early school photograph.
