In June 1996, the career paramilitaryleader Željko Ražnatović (Arkan) took over Obilić and swiftly turned it into atop club. With him in charge, Obilić started their way to the top of Yugoslavfootball, where the cross-town powerhouses Red Star and Partizan had alwaysbeen. In the 1996–97 season, the club finished the First National league GroupB as 1st, and advanced further for the first time to the First National leagueGroup A (then the league was divided into two groups, A and B, each consistingof 10 clubs). The next season was the premiere in the top, where they not onlyproved that they were a team that deserved to be there, but also that they wereamongst the elite.
