Arnold Friberg's "The Prayer at Valley Forge" is arguably themost beloved and reproduced patriotic painting in Americanhistory. Commissioned for the 1976 United States Bicentennial andcompleted by Friberg in 1975, the work depicts General GeorgeWashington kneeling in prayer in the deep snow beside his warhorseBlueskin during the brutal winter encampment of 1777–1778.
The painting was Friberg's masterwork — the culmination of acareer that had already produced twelve monumental Book of Mormonpaintings, the historical portraits for Cecil B. DeMille's "TheTen Commandments" (1956), and countless commissioned works forchurches, capitols, and private collections. When Friberg's estatereleased the signed & numbered paper edition of 1,500 in 1992, itwas the definitive collector's edition of the image — and it hasbeen sold out at the gallery level for years.
