Lerner was a noted member of the Chicago-based artisticgroup dubbed The Monster Roster. “The Monster Roster was an influential groupof figurative artists active in Chicago in the 1950s and 60s. This collectiveof artists challenged the traditional artistic norms of the time and created aunique style that was both provocative and haunting.”

The term was first coined in 1959 by artist andwriter Franz Schulze, who drew inspiration for the moniker partly from thedark, grotesque style of the artwork and partly from the Chicago Bears (the\"Monsters of the Midway\")
