PROTOTYPE AND BACKGROUND INFO: Railroad boxcars are perhaps not only the best-recognizedpieces of equipment ever put into service, but also one ofthe most identifiable symbols of the industry itself. Duringthe early years of the industry freight was hauled onsimple flatcars or early gondolas. In Upstate New York, theburgeoning Mohawk & Hudson Railroad, the first charteredsystem in the United States (which later became part of theNew York Central), came up with the novel idea of coveringits gondolas in 1833 to protect the loads from snow in thewinter. The car’s development continued starting with basicwood construction with steel outside-bracing. The 50 foot sizeemployed by the American Association of Railroads (AAR)was intended for hauling early automobiles and other largecargo. What made boxcars great, at least in the eyes of therailroads, was their ability to haul about anything! Railroadsthrive on redundancy to maximize efficiency.
