Description: Small 12mo, [2], vii, [1], 84 pages plus six illustrations. In Good condition. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in red Levant morocco with a paneled spine bearing gilt titling and gilt tooling, gilt tooling to boards, gilt titling to front board, and gilt dentelles to turn-ins; the leaves are Japanese vellum. Spine is missing endcaps and endbands, has heavy rubbing to its extremities and raised surfaces, and a few spots of chipping; the gilding in the compartments is intact and the gilded titling is still legible. Boards have splitting to joints, bumping to fore corners exposing the material below, shelfwear to edges, and a few small spots of discoloration; front board is almost completely detached, with only a small part of the front endpaper holding it on. Text block has gilt edges and moiré silk endpapers; has light scuffing to edges and light dust soiling to top edge; has age-toning and light scuffing throughout. The limitation page is signed by binder George Sutcliffe. Shelved in Room A octavo overflow.
NOTES
Before entering high politics, Augustine Birrell (1850–1933) was already a well-established literary figure known for witty political essays. He continued writing while holding office, and published this book during his tenure as Chief Secretary for Ireland. The titular essay in this book, the first of four contained therein, discusses how Birrell was often attracted to personal memoirs over formal histories when he wanted to know what people in the past actually felt and thought, finding that memoirs preserve the author\'s personality, prejudices, vanities, and peculiarities.
