PROVENANCE: Original Wentworth Gallery label; purchased more than 20 years ago and privately heldTHE PAINTING“Evening on the Rialto” captures Venice at its most atmospheric. The Rialto Bridge anchors the composition while richly colored Venetian architecture extends along the canal beneath a turbulent, cloud-filled evening sky.Warm illuminated windows and ornate street lamps glow against deep blues, turquoise, violet and muted rose tones. Reflections of gold, cream, blue and pink ripple across the Grand Canal, creating remarkable movement and luminosity. The surface is especially impressive. Thick, highly dimensional applications of oil paint create strong impasto throughout the clouds, architecture, water and glowing lamps. Expressive brushwork and raised passages give the painting an almost sculptural quality. Under changing light, the texture produces highlights and shadows that photographs cannot fully capture.JOHN ZACCHEOJohn Zaccheo is an accomplished American painter and sculptor recognized for richly colored landscapes, Mediterranean scenes and European cityscapes.
