Vintage 1940's to 1950's Mexican Saltillo Runner - Stunning Vibrant Color! Displays Beautifully!
Authentic Mexican Weaving from Saltillo, Coahuila measuring roughly 39.5” long *(not including the roughly 5” fringe at each end) x 19” wide. It is a thin mat-like runner due to the extremely tight weave of the wool, not at all bulky like much looser woven contemporary rugs and mats. The fine weave allows it to not only lie flat, but it also allows for draping in many applications. Back when this was made, it often took the weaver a nearly year to make a runner this size, and bigger blanket sized pieces 2 years. Pretty amazing work that you do not find today!
The runner is not made of acrylic, but of finely twisted, dyed wool warp threads woven on strong weft thread. The fringe shows that the weft used was a strong cotton. This runner features a beautiful brightly colored stepped diamond-eye pattern in the center, a characteristic trait of authentic Saltillo weavings. The other colors are woven in lovely ombres from bright to light. They remain vivid, and also display the telltale red, white and tiny green stripes between bigger blocks of color that the weaver incorporated into the weaving in honor to their homeland of Mexico.
Condition: The fringe is in excellent condition!There are some small holes and surface moth nibbles, as there often are in these old wool pieces. None of the holes are large or what I would consider tears or rips. I tried to point out all of these using the tip of my letter opener in photos. There are also some small stains/spots. There are also a few very light surface soiled spots. These blemishes are common and minor for this type of textile that is nearing the 75-80-year-old mark. They add to the charm of the runner and, in my belief are not distracting in appearance. No unpleasant odors.
