Bertha Lum was an American artist known for her color woodblock prints inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e techniques. After extended stays in Japan and China, she developed a distinctive style combining Eastern printmaking methods with Western subject matter and narrative themes.
Spirit of the Pele Volcano (1933) depicts a stylized female figure emerging from flowing, flame-like forms associated with volcanic activity. The composition uses flattened color areas and rhythmic contour lines characteristic of Lum’s mature woodcut practice.
