Clifford Smyth 1866-1943, was an American author and journalist.
From his obituary: \"In 1938 (sic, should be 1931) he completed “Builders of America,” a twenty-four volume history of America which sought to disclose American history through the lives of the nation\'s great men.\"
As this suggests, the books are written for adults, not children, and are enjoyably direct and filled with anecdotes about their subjects.
The obit also reveals a significant journalist whose assignments took him to Colombia, where he also lived for a time as American consul, as well as Kentucky where he embedded with a member of the Hatfield-McCoy feuding families. A much-traveled man who also lived in Britain, he also edited the NY Times Review of Books for a decade.
