Darwin's masterful on The Expression of Emotions in Mand and Animals was completed in 1871 and published in England. This book is the same first edition, published a year later in the USA. See the Wikipedia entry for the book (by title) for more information about the publishing and the importance of the work. Paul Ekman published an annotated edition in 1999 that brings the work up to date and shows how much it influenced the development of modern experimental psychology.
This one is in poor condition, but still a desirable copy. The cover is bumped and scuffed, though the title and decorations are intact. The hinges are loose but intact. The spine is stressed at a number of pages and completely separated between pp. 136 and 137. The textblock is complete, however, with all illustrations unmarked and all 7 photographic plates present, though a couple of them are slightly damaged. (Darwin insisted on including the plates even when warned by the printer that they would"make a hole in the profits.")The pages have a slight browning from age, but a quick scan did not find any markings to the pages.
Despite the damages, this is a decent copy of an important work in the history of Psychology.I will be selling a large (several hundred volumes)collection of old books in experimental Psychology.
