Four matching volumes in Near Fine condition overall, with rubbing to the leather, wear along the board edges, and fraying with small losses at the spine heads. The bindings remain firm and the volumes present beautifully together, with richly gilt spines and attractive marbled boards. Internally, all four are exceptionally well preserved, with crisp, clean pages. Each bears the same prior-owner bookplate on the front pastedown and is otherwise unmarked.
A handsome collection of four works by Charles Kingsley, uniformly bound in three-quarter red leather with gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled paper-covered boards, and matching marbled page edges. The set comprises Alton Locke: Tailor and Poet (New York, 1886), with a prefatory memoir by Thomas Hughes and an engraved portrait by C. H. Jeens; Two Years Ago (New York, 1882); Yeast: A Problem (New York, 1885); and the illustrated The Heroes; or, Greek Fairy Tales for My Children (London, 1879). The volumes retain their matching nineteenth-century bindings and the same former-owner bookplate, making an attractive coordinated collection.
Charles Kingsley was an English novelist, clergyman, and social reformer whose writing ranged from Victorian social criticism to historical fiction and retellings of classical mythology. Alton Locke explores working-class life and the Chartist movement; Yeast examines social and religious questions; Two Years Ago combines romance, adventure, and contemporary Victorian concerns; and The Heroes retells Greek myths, including the adventures of Perseus, the Argonauts, and Theseus. Together, these four volumes offer a varied selection of Kingsley’s work in a particularly appealing period binding.
