China – Kirin & Heilungkiang 1927 8 Cents Reddish Orange Junk Definitive
A used 8c reddish-orange example of the Republic of China\'s Second Peking Printing Junk definitive, bearing the black Chinese overprint 限吉黑貼用, meaning “Restricted for Use in Kirin-Heilungkiang.”
Issued in 1927, these stamps were specially restricted to the northeastern provinces of Kirin and Heilungkiang. At the time, northeastern China lacked a uniform currency system, and differences in exchange rates made it possible to buy postage stamps cheaply in the region and transfer them elsewhere for resale. The postal authorities introduced the special regional overprint to prevent this currency-related stamp speculation.
The central design depicts a traditional Chinese junk, one of the most recognizable definitive designs of the early Republic of China postal service.
